To allow longer message lengths, at cheaper cost, for alphabets which are mostly latin, but have a few special chars, or diacritics, there is the GSM 3.38 standard, which a bunch of ASCII symbols/chars and replaces them with the extra greek chars, and some diacritics for other languages (umlouts, accents, etc) (capitols only). In addition to being annoying (either limiting message length, or upgrading to MMS more often), this could have cost implications since you could use twice as many messages quota units to send messages (depending on the length of the message). This 7 bit encoding allows slightly more than 1 char per byte, giving 160 latin characters per SMS.Īlternatively you can use UCS-2/UTF-16 (unicode), which uses two bytes per char, and supports every alphabet and character set in the world, but since every character is two bytes, total message length is limited to 70 characters. There are multiple encoding methods which are supported, by default US carriers are expecting 7 bit ASCII. The problem is that the US carriers do not consistently fully support GSM 03.38 ( ). The post below is to serve as google bait for other people who might run into this problem (I might copy it into a standalone post for better SEO) GSM input mode down converts everything to the 7bit character set.

Auto appears to use 7 bit GSM if you are only using characters in the base letter set (latin or caps only, no diacritics), and upgrades to unicode if you are using anything else. Tl dr : I switched my friends phone to "automatic" in the SMS advanced settings (choices were GSM, Unicode, and auto), and it worked fine. Θ appears to be the symbol that is like %, but with two 00 on the bottom the first box (presumably a λ) is, and every other instance of λ also comes across as. But when I look at the reddit text in my phone, it is showing something interesting. It seems like more than just a rendering problem, if I copy the text it stays as unknown chars, even in other programs that can read Greek.ĮINAI KA⁊! You can see in this screenshot how his messages come across, and also that I can render Greek text just fine. Presumably its something about the way his phone is encoding the Greek, since my phone works for every other situation, but has anyone ever seen this problem before? it converts all of his letters to capitols, and then also removes any characters which aren't also in the English alphabet. Browsing, typing, chatting, whatever.īut I have one friend, who is from Greece (but in the US, with a US phone), and when he texts me, my phone goes nuts. I use Greek on my phone all the time, and it works fine.
